An Afternoon in the Haymarket- N 8th and P// Then & Now

Then & Now - North 8th and P Street

As I walked through the intersection of N 8th and P Street at 1:00 on a Wednesday, I immediately noticed that it was an active street. People were walking from business to business, cars were stopping and going, and the parking spots were full. The smell of food lingered in the air. It was quiet, but there was a sense of urgency. It was a business day and it seemed like everyone was headed somewhere important. While I was watching the cars, observing the people, and smelling the lingering food, I could not help but notice the beautiful architecture that surrounded me.

The inspiration behind the book that I created is the four historic buildings that are on the corners of this intersection. Housed in these buildings are five businesses that I chose to highlight. I have created a book that details the history of these beautiful buildings and talks about a couple of businesses that you can visit if you please. Enjoy!
I chose a simplistic look for my book layouts. I wanted to exemplify the beauty of the buildings in my spreads, while adding some illustrations and colors throughout the book. I chose to incorporate a hand-drawn map, building drawing for the cover, and a hand-drawn light post for the middle spread. I believe this makes the whole book feel more organic and playful. The colors that I selected were pulled from a palette that I believe is a beautiful pop of color to the cream color pages.

I thoroughly believe that I was able to use the research I have to make an expressive and informational portrait of my intersection, N 8th and P Street.

Hopefully this inspired you to have your very own afternoon in the Haymarket.
